Final Book-Natalie Starley

I enjoy finding the beauty in life especially when it comes from unconventional places.  The idea of “Through the Looking Glass” is a concept that I believe puts into perspective that art can be found in the most unusual of places. Beauty does not come from objects, it comes from the artistic value captured by entrepreneurs in their endeavor to capture life. This beauty that I am trying to inspire others to focus on is within the eye of the beholder. To a passing eye these may seem like inanimate, unworthy objects to dedicate time and attention to, but I argue that it is not the objects themselves but rather the light refraction, the colors, and the architectural set up that creates a one shot piece of beauty that underlies deeper meaning in the simple things in life.

How do I feel the most POWERFUL?
I have always been interested in human perception and how it effects people emotionally.
I wanted to illustrate what makes each of us humans feel unique and confident. As each individual wrote what made them powerful, it was cool to see how they presented their body language.
Each of these individuals that I photographed play a special role in my life. They each exemplify qualities I strive to have.
I was able to capture these individuals in a place where they felt comfortable and able to express their emotions superficially.

Hands.

They have become so common that their beauty is rarely acknowledged anymore. Hands do many tasks that are essential for human life.

Along with these essential tasks, hands are the instruments used to beautify the earth, create lasting relationships, and learn hobbies that bring us joy.

I chose to take pictures of people’s hands doing their favorite things because I wanted to bring attention to all the good things that they do for us that go unnoticed.

You never realize just how many flags there are around you until you look for them. There are so many different types of flags, even in the small towns of this county. My objective was to portray how American citizens show their patriotism. At first, I began to look for anything patriotic, but it began to shift once I realized I was only capturing pictures of flags. My vision narrowed even further when I chose to photograph during the golden hour. This only gave me about a two-hour window each day for photography. The main struggle came from finding enough unique flags. I would take long walks around Ephraim looking for inspiration, and when that wasn't enough, I began to drive around.

This project has truly shown me the meaning of dedication and endurance. It took almost a whole month of going out every afternoon to photograph this project. Every minute was worth it in the end. I learned so much about how people express their patriotism. Patriotism is more than a flag waving in a yard. It is an expression of the love people have for their country. I hope that those viewing my work will also feel this expression.
