| Artist Statement We live in a world of technological innovation. It is this type of innovation which plays a primary factor in every economic system. The level of technology and the degree in which the masses enjoy it today is unprecedented. It is in our lives constantly, but do we really understand to what extent it influences our lives? For most of us it never crosses our minds, it is much simpler than that; we use it knowing nothing more than that it serves its purpose… that it works. I am a tinkerer though I have never been electronically inclined. I love seeing what others, or even I don’t understand; the things that lie beneath the surface. Even after seeing where the ribbons connect, where the screws, wires, chips, transistors, displays and circuit boards go, I remain bewildered. The electronic devices that I photographed are Items that you could find in 90% of American households and 99% of all college dorms. They are things most of us use every day. Over several weeks I would deconstruct these electronic items and photographed them. I want this collection of work to give people the opportunity to see the internal complexity of these seemingly chic, simple and clean external structures. Hopefully we can all gain a little more appreciation not only for the numerous technological luxuries we enjoy and take for granted but also for those who fuel a big part of our technological and economic progress. I would like to give a special thanks to Mikie Hirschi , Sarah Dyreng, Paige Bradly and Cameron Clark for their help with this project, their assistance was invaluable. |
