Final Project - Tia Taylor

Forgotten Memories

I have always been drawn to architecture, and the building of homes, particularly older ones. The beauty and craftsmanship of old houses have always intrigued me, especially when they are preserved and still used decades after they were built. But for this project I wanted to explore the other side of it―the ones that weren't saved from the elements, but still somehow hold some kind of beauty in our eyes. There are a lot of these types of places where I live because they were built years ago when they valley was first settled in the nineteenth century. These are part of what makes the towns around here unique. A lot of people in this county feel a connection to these places because they were built by our ancestors. But others were just left because of lack of time or money so they haven't been knocked down or replaced.
In some of the photos you can see that modern buildings were built next to or around them, and because no one cared enough to get rid of them, and they have just become a part of the people that live here. But I've tried to see the beauty in these places. And reiterate the importance and value that these once held to their owners. These used to be places that held memories, but now they have all been forgotten. I wanted to show that these can be seen as beautiful again, and also show the skill and love that it takes to build a building that will still stand almost 100 years later, unlike the disposable world that we now live in.
