Final Book - Allison Bishop

Frozen in Fall

With every change in season, there is a unique level of anticipation, be it a change from winter to spring or summer to fall. Every season has its own highlights that get people excited, whether it is for a temperature change, a holiday, or their favorite sport. For me, the excitement always comes in fall. There is something enchanting about the color, the mood, and the overall reaction from people. Fall almost always brings on a change regardless of where you are or what you are doing.

For this project, I tried to capture the beauty in the transformation from autumn to winter. For some, this change is greatly anticipated, while others bemoan the loss of warmer weather and the washed out feeling winter brings. This year it started snowing almost before fall even began. Despite the snow, I still ventured up the canyon on multiple occasions to see the leaves make their breathtaking transformation. What I saw on these trips was incredible. Unlike what I had expected, I saw the two seasons coexisting in a very complimentary way, and I wanted to share that with other people. Of course, after that it stopped snowing, so I had to find a new way to get the idea across. I ended up freezing dozens of leaves I found in multiple locations in order to recreate the feeling of winter and fall complimenting each other.

I hope this project helps those who see it to find beauty in change. I chose the name ‘Frozen in Fall’ to show that while the project is putting some elements in a new environment, it leaves behind still others that are familiar. Like autumn’s leaves frozen in winter’s ice and snow, there is beauty in unexpected places and situations. By time the winter months roll around, we expect all the color given to us in fall to have gone, but it doesn’t have to be that way. If we let it, then the highlights of what has happened before can bring some of the light and color back into the change of season we are experiencing, regardless of what it may be.
