Final Book - Sarah Slansky

Woven Lanes

Roads are what hold us all together. This is a stereotypical view of the roads, that as they reach across the country they also connect us as well in a way. Each road weaves together in a tangle of society. By way of roads, we are all connected. However, life is never as smooth-cut and clear as pictures of roads normally are. I want my photography project to reflect that abstraction and the unclear aspects of life through the roads we believe are a part of what holds us together because they can also be what hold us apart.

Separating yourself from home and becoming independent is part of the natural process of development. Sometimes finding that one thing, although far-fetched, to connect oneself back home when times get tough is necessary to ease homesickness. Everyone travels by roads, it truly is how we are able to stay connected to family and friends both far and near. However, it is also the distance put between them and us.

I never held a great concept of roads until I made the roads the distance between my family and I. Now I see roads in a new light, and by getting nearer to the roads that distance me from home I have learned more as I become more independent through new life experiences. The experiences that gain our focus, similar to the focus in the images, are prevalent to other events in our lives. We never truly see the whole picture at once. We are limited to our own perspective, which can be liberating and inhibiting in spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical growth.
